St Dominic Savio Catholic Primary School ‘Serve the Lord with Joy’

Peer Mediators

Our Peer Mediation programme is highly valued at St Dominic Savio, both by the children who benefit from it on the playground and by those who aspire to join the team!

Peer Mediators are carefully selected from our upper Key Stage 2 classes, and their primary role is to help their peers resolve friendship challenges during playtime. Trained in conflict resolution and active listening, they ensure that children feel heard, respected, and supported.

Importantly, our Peer Mediators are equipped with coaching skills, enabling them to guide their peers in finding their own solutions to problems, rather than offering their own opinions or answers. This empowers children to resolve conflicts independently, fostering their problem-solving abilities.

At St Dominic Savio, our Peer Mediators create a positive, approachable presence on the playground. To offer a dedicated space for support, we have special blue benches where children can go for help with their friendships. These benches, generously donated by the PTA, serve as a safe, welcoming area for children to receive peer support.

The Peer Mediators' support has significantly reduced the number of issues requiring adult intervention, as many children feel more comfortable discussing their concerns with a peer.

In addition to providing a child-led and child-friendly service, Peer Mediation also benefits the mediators themselves. They develop valuable skills in communication, empathy, and leadership that will support them in all areas of their lives, including future education and beyond.

The Bible teaches us to live together in harmony, as seen in this verse:
“Make every effort to live in peace with everyone and to be holy; without holiness no one will see the Lord.” (Hebrews 12:14)

Through the Peer Mediation programme, our students are living this teaching, fostering peace, understanding and harmony in our school community.
