At St Dominic Savio, caring for our common home is at the heart of all we do. Through educating all year groups about the importance of looking after God’s creations and imparting a sustainable culture for the future generations is inherently important. Inspired by Pope Francis within Laudato Si', we understand that the future of our common home is in our hands.
From Early Years to Year 6, children are taught about ways to care for God’s creation and how to lead a more sustainable lifestyle. Every year group elects a member to join the Eco-Council each year. The Eco-Council ensures that every classroom is following our school’s eco-charter—created by the Eco-Council—for example, ensuring lights are switched off before leaving the room and that the classroom bins are being used correctly (recycling and non-recycling).
Sustainability in the Curriculum
Alongside our Climate Action Plan, sustainability is interwoven throughout the curriculum through planned lessons, Celebrations of the Word, as well as impromptu class discussions. Across all year groups, scripture reinforces our responsibility to care for the Earth, including Genesis 2:15: "The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to work it and keep it."
Pope Francis reminds us in Laudato Si':
"Living our vocation to be protectors of God’s handiwork is essential to a life of virtue; it is not an optional or a secondary aspect of our Christian experience."
